Suede Bag Guide: What Is Suede and How Do You Protect It?
20 October 2026
With its velvety texture and warm look, suede is one of the most loved materials for autumn and winter outfits. But what exactly is suede, how does it differ from leather, and how do you protect it?
What is suede?
Suede is a natural type of leather with a velvety texture, made by treating the underside of the hide with special methods. In other words, suede is also genuine leather; the difference is in its surface. Its soft, matte surface gives it a warm, characterful look.
Why does it look like different shades?
The fibres of suede reflect light in different directions. When you stroke the surface in one direction with your hand, you will see the shade change. This is an entirely natural characteristic and one of the things that make suede what it is.
How do you protect suede?
- Avoid contact with water and oil; give your suede bag a rest on rainy days.
- When dust builds up, brush it gently in one direction with a suede brush.
- Do not use household chemicals on stains.
- Seek professional care when needed.
- Use a dust bag for storage; keep it away from direct sunlight.
How to style suede
Suede pairs very well with wool, cashmere and denim. Tan and brown suede shades complete the warm autumn palette with cream and beige layers, while in black and navy outfits they become an elegant detail that stands out through texture.
