About Genuine Leather

A story of nature, mastery and timelessness. Genuine leather is not just a material; it is a natural material that gains character over time and, when properly worked, can be used for years. At DAPHMIN, when we choose our materials we look not only at their appearance but also at long life, workability and a natural structure that grows more beautiful with age. On this page we have gathered the most frequently asked questions about genuine leather.

What is genuine leather?

Genuine leather is made by putting natural animal hide through a series of processes that make it durable and usable. Unlike synthetic materials, every piece of genuine leather is unique.

Natural grain marks, pores, slight variations in tone and fine creases are part of the leather's character. These details are not flaws; they are a sign of its natural origin.

Why choose genuine leather?

Genuine leather:

  • lasts a long time,
  • breathes,
  • softens over time,
  • takes on a character of its own through use,
  • can be used for years with the right care.

Rather than losing its beauty as the years pass, a well-made leather piece develops a unique look that carries the marks of personal use.

The difference between genuine and faux leather

Genuine leather is a natural material. Faux leather is made from various synthetic materials using different methods.

Genuine leather:

  • has natural pores,
  • breathes,
  • softens over time,
  • ages in its own distinctive way.

Synthetic surfaces, on the other hand, may crack, peel or deform over time. Although the two materials serve different purposes, DAPHMIN collections use genuine leather for its long life and natural character.

Not all leather is the same

Leather quality depends on many factors, such as the raw hide used, the tanning method, surface treatments, craftsmanship, cutting quality and stitching quality. That is why the words "genuine leather" alone do not define quality.

Genuine leather grows more beautiful with use

Over time, genuine leather softens, adapts to the way you use it and develops a look of its own. This natural change is one of the most valuable qualities of fine leather goods.

What is suede?

Suede is a natural type of leather with a velvety texture, made by specially treating the underside of the hide. Its soft surface gives it a warm, distinctive look. Variations in tone depending on the direction of the surface nap are an entirely natural feature.

DAPHMIN leathers

The genuine leathers and genuine suedes used in DAPHMIN collections are chosen with long-lasting use, a natural look, durability and timeless design in mind. Every piece is carefully made by experienced craftspeople and goes through quality control.

How should leather goods be stored?

  • Keep them in a dust bag,
  • keep them away from direct sunlight,
  • do not leave them in very humid places,
  • fill them with soft padding to help them keep their shape.

Yes. Light marks from use are part of the character of natural leather.

Does genuine leather soften over time?

Is all genuine leather the same quality?

No. Genuine leather can come in different quality levels depending on many factors, such as the raw hide used, the processing method and the craftsmanship.

Are colour variations normal in leather goods?
